Preston County Supply Company incorporated

West Virginia corporate records date Preston County Supply Company’s filing to November 12, 1910. A February 1912 newspaper notice places the business at Cascade, where it was gathering ice for the coming summer and filling a newly built icehouse larger than its previous one. The company changed its name to Preston Supply Company in 1973; state records document its voluntary dissolution in 1977.

What the evidence establishes

The West Virginia Secretary of State’s online record for Preston County Supply Company, organization 94127, lists November 12, 1910 as its effective and filing date. This is the corporate date, not a verified store-opening date. The original charter has not been examined.

The Preston County Journal, February 15, 1912, page 1, identifies the company at Cascade and reports that it was storing ice for summer in a new icehouse larger than its former one. The newspaper date documents when this activity was reported; it does not establish the icehouse’s precise construction or opening date.

The original company record renders its office location as “CADCADE.” Interpreting this as a transcription error for Cascade is an inference supported by the contemporary newspaper and the successor corporation’s explicit Cascade address.

Both corporate records document the February 28, 1973 name change to Preston Supply Company. The successor record, organization 94216, records voluntary dissolution on June 27, 1977. These legal events should not be treated as proven dates of store closure.

The two state records disagree on the reference for a June 30, 1915 capital amendment: the original record gives Book 85, page 326, while the successor gives Book 185, page 326. Consult the underlying filing before citing that book reference.

Founders, ownership, exact premises, mining-company affiliations, scrip issuance and redemption practices, and the beginning and end of retail operations remain unverified.
