About these maps and their alignment
1875: M. Wood White, White’s County and District Map of the State of West Virginia, published in Grafton. David Rumsey Map Collection, 16069.000. Original scan (JP2).
1930: Rand McNally & Company, Rand McNally Standard Map of West Virginia. David Rumsey Map Collection, 13001.004. Original scan (JP2).
1784 journey (published 1932): Lawrence Martin, editor, The George Washington Atlas, United States George Washington Bicentennial Commission. The full sheet also depicts the 1770 Ohio River journey. David Rumsey catalog, 0465.035. Image credit: David Rumsey Map Collection, David Rumsey Map Center, Stanford University Libraries. CC BY-NC-SA 3.0; aligned and cropped for this overlay under the same license. The original hosted scan is unchanged.
The Washington layer is independently aligned using eight printed longitude ticks and four latitude ticks. Its regional image is reprojected onto the modern map. The red line is a later reconstruction, not a surveyed trail; markers include approximate locations. This alignment does not establish exact stopping places or a route along modern roads. The town-reference checkbox applies to the 1875 and 1930 layers.
The 1875 and 1930 Preston County portions have been cropped with some surrounding area and aligned using printed town symbols. Each image was shifted, rotated, scaled, and sheared as a whole. Local map features have not been moved individually, and the original scans remain unchanged.
Modern comparison coordinates come from the 2025 U.S. Census Places Gazetteer. They are representative points inside present-day places, not surveyed historic buildings or post offices. Older cartography, scan distortion, symbol placement, and these differing reference locations all contribute to mismatches.
| Layer | Town matches | Average fit discrepancy* |
|---|---|---|
| 1875 | 11 | About 1.0 mile |
| 1930 | 9 | About 0.7 mile |
*Root-mean-square discrepancy at the points used to fit the image; this is not an independent accuracy guarantee. Leave-one-out checks were approximately 1.4 miles for 1875 and 1.1 miles for 1930. Some locations differ more. This preview should not be used to establish exact historic sites, property lines, or coordinates for new research records.
