Hopemont Sanitarium Becomes Hopemont State Hospital
The West Virginia Legislature passed House Bill 994 on March 10, 1965, discontinuing Hopemont’s exclusively tuberculosis-focused sanitarium and establishing Hopemont State Hospital for chronically ill, aged, and infirm residents. The law took effect 90 days after passage and directed that Hopemont’s tuberculosis patients be transferred to Pinecrest Sanitarium by July 1, 1968.
