Friends of the Cheat Forms After a Mine Blowout Pollutes the Cheat River
Polluted water from a large, illegally sealed underground coal mine near Albright blew out a hillside and poured into Muddy Creek, then the Cheat River, turning the river orange for miles. Concerned citizens and other stakeholders organized Friends of the Cheat to restore the river and coordinate work against more than a century of mining-related pollution.
