Service, remembrance, and Preston County
Explore names recorded in Preston County military-history sources. Each source records something different; a name is a starting point for research, not automatically a complete service record or a confirmed identity.
Names printed in Chapter XII of Samuel T. Wiley’s 1882 History of Preston County.
Browse Wiley entriesNames included in the West Virginia Veterans Memorial Archives Database’s Preston County results.
Browse state recordsFuture entries with evidence of service and a Preston County connection beyond these two source collections. No entries have been added yet.
The count above is a count of source entries, not a count of unique veterans. The same person may appear in more than one source, and a shared name does not automatically establish that the records refer to the same individual.

Workbook list reconciliation — needs review: This saved state record appears in the original-detail tab but not its main Veterans tab.
If a person is missing from a source collection, or a name or detail needs correction, please tell us what you know and include a source when possible. You may also request that a PCTT listing be removed.
Submissions go to Shirley’s private contribution inbox for manual review. Nothing is added, changed, or removed automatically. A request to remove a PCTT listing does not erase or rewrite an underlying source record.
Wiley’s military history: Samuel T. Wiley, History of Preston County (West Virginia) (Kingwood: Journal Printing House, 1882), Chapter XII, printed pages 292–310. Read the digitized source. The index preserves names, unit headings, and printed page references from that local-history chapter. It confirms that a name appears in Wiley, not the identity or service of a particular individual.
West Virginia Veterans Memorial: The state memorial portion comes from the West Virginia Veterans Memorial Archives Database’s Preston County results. This page uses the saved PCTT research workbook read October 9, 2026, rather than a live feed. The Archives’ database description sets the memorial’s eligibility rules; those rules explain the scope of the collection, not the circumstances of any individual death.
The current state memorial records cover World War I, World War II, Korean Conflict, and Vietnam records. Preston County is the Archives’ county association; it does not mean every person was born, lived, or was buried here. Community associations may refer to different stages of a person’s life.
Repeated names are retained. They may represent different people, a repeated appearance in the original source, or a question that needs research. PCTT will link separate source entries to a shared research profile only when the evidence supports that identification.
Independently documented service may eventually include Civil War, War of 1812, and other periods. Each entry will need evidence of service and a Preston County connection, with its own source links. Original West Virginia Archives record links are preserved.
